william h. carney
William H. Carney was born on February 29, 1840 in Norfolk, Virginia as a slave. He was an African American soldier during the Civil War, who won the Medal of Honor for his efforts at the Battle of Fort Wagner. He was not given the award until 37 years after his effort, and he was named the last African American to get the Medal of Honor. Later on in his life, after the war, he worked at a post office, and he gave speeches at public events. He later on passed in 1908.
