Frederick Douglass, born February of 1818 on the eastern shore of Maryland. As a child he lived with his grandparents and an aunt of his, seeing his mother only four or five times before her passing. He was seven at the time of her death. When Frederick turned eight, he was moved to Baltimore to live with Hugh Auld, where he first heard the word abolition. After a few years, he was sent to the country where he was hired out to a farm. The treatment he received was brutal and, on January 1, 1836, he planned an escape. After escaping to NYC, he joined many organizations in New Bedford, and gave speeches about his time as a slave.
