After the first attack on Fort Wagner had failed on July 11, Gilmore reinforced his troops on Morris Island in the City of Charleston. On July 18, the all-black 54th Massachusetts Regiment launched a second attack on Fort Wagner ending in siege like attacks. It ended on September 7, 1863 resulting in heavy Union causalities and Confederate victory. The siege did however, change the view of African Americans in the Civil War.
