underwater mines
The Union and the Confederacy both used underwater mines during the Civil War. However, the Confederacy had more success with the weapon because they destroyed about a dozen of Union ships with the mines. The Union, on the other hand, only destroyed half of a dozen Confederate ships. The rebels relied on an oceanographer named Maury, who contained lots of knowledge about the weapon and how to use. They owed most of their success to his knowledge.
