Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in 1797. She was born in Swartekill, Ulster County , New York. However, she escaped with her infant daughter in 1826. She is known as the first black to win a course against a white man. She won in hope to recover her son. Truth was given the Isabella Baumfree, and is best known for her speeches on gender inequalities. Her most famous speech being "Ain't I a Woman" was delivered in Akron, Ohio 1851. She helped to recruit black troops for Union and later attempted to claim lands for blacks but was denied.
